Working the Hotel Pools in Okinawa: Indoor, Saltwater, Night Pool and Fireworks

On a family trip to Okinawa, the hotel pool is not a bonus — it is the itinerary. Across four nights at the Hyatt Regency Seragaki Island we were in the water every single day, including the wet one. Here is how we actually used them.

What you'll find here

1. One day was a washout. The indoor pool saved it

One of our four days brought heavy rain — a 100% chance of it.

August in Okinawa turns fast even when it looks clear. At a hotel with only outdoor pools, that day would have been lost entirely.

It ended up being the day we felt most rewarded for our choice of hotel. If you are taking children to Okinawa, whether there is an indoor pool is worth checking first.

2. There is a saltwater pool and a freshwater one

The resort has both saltwater and ordinary freshwater pools.

With children this quietly matters. Some children hate salt water in their eyes, and having a freshwater pool means you can simply say “today, that one”.

There is also a shallow pool for younger children, with small balls floating in it, so children too young to swim still have somewhere of their own.

As we wrote in choosing a beach resort with kids, the presence of a shallow area completely changes how long you can stay. A uniformly deep pool buys you an hour; a shallow one buys you the whole afternoon.

4. The night pool was the best of it

The night pool was what stayed with us. Lit up, it becomes a different place entirely.

Honestly, it is busy — Obon will have had something to do with that. Even so, being able to swim once the heat has gone is a real gift with children. It costs them far less than the middle of the day.

📌 This may only run over Obon. Whether they happen at all, and at what time, varies by season — check with the hotel before you stay.

6. The hotel pools are emptiest in the morning

The unexpected sweet spot was early morning — far quieter than the middle of the day.

With grandparents along, the midday sun is what costs them most. Splitting pool time between morning and evening let everyone keep going comfortably.

7. Pool Q&A for families

Q. Can you swim on a rainy day? A. Yes, if there is an indoor pool. We spent an entire wet day in ours. Check for one before you book.

Q. Is there anything for very young children? A. There is a shallow children's pool, with balls floating in it — usable before they can swim.

Q. Is a night pool good with kids? A. Yes. With the heat gone, it is far less draining than daytime. It is busier, though.

Q. Are there fireworks every night? A. Possibly only over Obon. We saw them at 8.30pm. Check with the hotel in advance.
