Family Trip: Itoshima, Fukuoka — seven x seven Itoshima, a Palm-Tree Swing, and an Ocean-View Lunch

Hello. In December 2024, our family stayed at seven x seven Itoshima, on the Itoshima Peninsula in Nishi-ku, Fukuoka City. True to its promise of ocean views from every room, both our room and the lounge looked straight out over the Genkai Sea. The next day we visited one of Itoshima's most popular photo spots, the "palm tree swing," and had a generous lunch of nigiri sushi and seafood rice bowls at a restaurant overlooking the ocean. 1. Staying at seven x seven Itoshima: views from the room and lounge

📍 seven x seven ITOSHIMA — 266 Nishiura, Nishi-ku, Fukuoka / check-in 15:00, check-out 11:00 / despite the name, it sits on the Fukuoka-city side of the Itoshima peninsula / official site

We stayed at seven x seven Itoshima (266 Nishiura, Nishi-ku, Fukuoka City, Fukuoka Prefecture), which soft-opened in March 2024 and had its grand opening on 26 April 2024 — all 47 rooms with ocean views. The double-height lounge, with its tall ceiling and huge windows, gave us an uninterrupted view of the Genkai Sea horizon.

From our room's window, the ocean felt close enough to hear the waves. The weather was a bit rough that day, but that only added to the dramatic, wintery look of the Sea of Japan.

💡 Tip with kids: every room has an ocean view, but the angle differs by wing and floor — request a room with the sea directly in front when you book for the best outlook.

2. Playing on Itoshima's famous "palm tree swing"

The next day, we drove a short way to one of Itoshima's best-known photo spots: the "palm tree swing," on the grounds of Zauo Honten in Oda, Nishi-ku. Two palm trees lean out at a dramatic angle from the white sand, with a swing hung between them so you can swing straight out toward the sea.

Even under a grey winter sky, the white sand against the ocean made for a striking scene. My child turned around mid-swing with a huge smile — my favorite photo from this whole trip.

💡 Tip with kids: this spot is popular, so it can get crowded. Visiting earlier in the morning gives you a better chance at having it to yourselves.

3. Nigiri sushi and seafood rice bowls at an ocean-view restaurant

After the swing, we had lunch at a restaurant in Itoshima's Nishiura area with a view of the sea. Big windows looked out over the Genkai Sea and a headland in the distance, and our table filled up with a beautiful nigiri sushi platter and glossy seafood rice bowls (kaisendon).

The kids dug right into the fresh salmon and salmon roe. Outside the window, the winter waves of the Sea of Japan were rough, which made the warmth inside all the more comfortable.

💡 Tip with kids: seaside restaurants in Itoshima can get busy on weekends and holidays, so it's worth allowing extra time if you visit then.

4. Honest Q&A for families (Itoshima)

Q. Is seven x seven Itoshima comfortable with kids? A. Every room has an ocean view and they're fairly spacious, so our child had plenty of room to move around. The lounge's high ceiling also made it feel relaxed and open even with a small child in tow.

Q. Is the palm tree swing within walking distance of the hotel? A. No — it required a short drive from our accommodation area. Itoshima's sights are spread out across the peninsula, so a rental car makes getting around much easier.

Q. Is Itoshima cold in December? A. The seaside area felt colder than the actual temperature suggested, thanks to strong winds (just our impression). Pack warm layers, especially if you plan to spend time playing on the swing.

5. When to go & what to wear (Itoshima in December)

Our visit in late December brought grey skies and a cold wind off the sea (impressions only; always check the latest forecast before you travel).

• By the sea: strong wind makes it feel colder than the thermometer says — solid winter layers are a must
• Swing & sand play: shoes that can get sandy are a good idea
• Hotel & car: both are well heated, so easy-to-remove layers are convenient

7. Practical notes (transport, packing)

• Getting around: Itoshima's sights are spread across the peninsula, so a car is the practical way to get around
• Swing time: bring a change of clothes or a towel, since it's played on sand
• Seaside cold: December winds are strong — don't forget warm layers for adults too
• Choosing a hotel: if an ocean view matters to you, confirm the room's direction when booking
