Maldives with Kids: Reaching Park Hyatt's Paradise by Plane and Boat

Hello. In the fall of 2022, our family (with a child) visited a luxury Park Hyatt resort in the Maldives. After landing in the capital, Malé, getting there meant a further connection by domestic flight and then by boat — a true hideaway of a resort. The journey was long, but what waited at the other end was an unforgettable stay. Every photo here is my own.

1. Beyond Malé: connecting by plane, then boat

The Maldives is a nation of over a thousand islands, and depending on the resort, getting there after landing at Malé's international airport can mean a further connection by domestic flight, then finally a speedboat. The Park Hyatt we stayed at was exactly that kind of resort. From Malé airport we took a bus to the domestic terminal to connect to our next flight.

From the air, we could see the whole of Malé laid out across its atoll. Islands floating in impossibly blue water made for a classically Maldivian view.

The final stretch from the airport to the resort was by speedboat. Our kids wore life jackets and sipped juice, laughing the whole way.

💡 Tip with kids: the long plane-then-boat journey can get boring for kids. Packing drinks and a favorite toy in your carry-on makes a real difference.

2. Life at the overwater villa's private pool

After the long journey, our room turned out to be an overwater villa built right above the sea, with a private pool on the terrace — our child loved it so much she wanted to get in even at dusk.

Time spent relaxing in bed was its own kind of relief after the travel.

💡 Tip with kids: overwater villas often open straight onto the sea or pool from the terrace, so keeping a close eye on young kids is essential.

3. Family photos on the jetty, and exploring the island

Long jetties connected the different areas of the resort, and stopping partway along for a family photo became something of a ritual — posing together against the blue water and the overwater villas behind us.

Exploring the island slowly by buggy or on foot in beach sandals was its own kind of fun.

4. A special night: dinner set up on the beach

One evening during our stay, dinner was set up at a table right on the sand. Under the lights on the night beach, our child nibbled bread while watching cartoons on a tablet, while the adults relaxed over glasses of wine.

Dinner with the sound of waves in the background had a sense of occasion that felt distinctly Park Hyatt.

💡 Tip with kids: beach dinners can attract insects after dark, so bug spray is worth packing.

5. Honest Q&A for a remote Maldives resort with kids

Q. Is connecting by plane and boat hard with kids? A. The travel time adds up, but the quiet and the scenery waiting at the end were exceptional. With drinks and toys to manage the journey, it felt like a manageable trade-off.

Q. Are overwater villas safe with kids around? A. The private pool and terrace open straight onto the sea, so an adult needs to be present at all times — especially important with young children.

Q. How much more does it cost? A. Compared with a resort close to Malé, adding a domestic flight tends to push costs higher. It's worth budgeting for it as a special trip.

6. When to go & what to wear (Maldives in October)

Our visit in October fell near the tail end of the wet season, and the weather felt changeable (impressions only; always check the latest forecast before you travel).

• Daytime: hot and humid — sun protection is a must
• Weather: sudden squalls are possible; a folding umbrella helps
• Sea & pool: warm year-round and comfortable for swimming

• Packing: drinks, snacks, and a tablet or other entertainment for the long journey
• Pool & terrace: never leave kids unsupervised at an overwater villa
• Bugs: pack repellent for outdoor evening dining
