Exactly one week after coming home from Okinawa's main island, we flew to Ishigaki for 4 days — this time it was just the four of us, no grandparents this trip. We stayed at seven x seven Ishigaki. Our stay at seven x seven Itoshima had been so good that we went in with high hopes. 1. Our 4-day itinerary, in the order we actually did it

Day 1: We flew in from Okinawa's main island and checked in to seven x seven Ishigaki. After settling in with the Champagne welcome drink, we headed out in the evening for dinner at Ryukyu Bistro in Ishigaki Village.

Day 2: Bad weather and strong wind kept us close to the hotel. Our morning stop at Maruha Suisan was a bust — closed at 9:30 — so we picked up a takeout lunch from the seafood market instead and ate it in the room. Dinner was at the hotel restaurant, batida.

Day 3: The wind picked up even more, strong enough to shut off the hotel's automatic doors. The rain had stopped, though, so we headed for the pool, then lunch at Toraichi, an Ishigaki-beef restaurant. In the afternoon we toured the Ishigaki Limestone Cave and stopped for gelato at Mirumiru Honpo on the way back — and got our revenge at Maruha Suisan too.

Day 4: After checking out, we drove 30 minutes from the city to Kabira Bay. We didn't have time to go down to the lookout, so it was a view from the parking lot above — distant, but beautiful. We finished with one last meal at Ishigaki Airport's food court — Yaeyama soba, mozuku tempura, and more — before flying home. A fun trip to Ishigaki, right to the very end.

3. Real Q&A on Ishigaki with kids

Q. Is it worth combining this with a trip to Okinawa's main island? A. We went to Ishigaki exactly one week after getting back from Okinawa's main island. We left the grandparents at home this time and kept it to a light four-person trip, which made for a different feel from the three-generation trip right before it. If you can take a longer stretch of time off, spacing the two out by a few days and covering both is a reasonable way to do it.

Q. What did you do on the windy day? A. The wind was strong enough to shut off the automatic doors, but the rain had stopped, so we went to the pool. Good to have an indoor backup plan too, just in case.
